Once again, another killer shoot with a killer team at Leo Carrillo State Beach (a recent favorite shoot spot). Huge thanks to Monique from Q Models and to Rachel Burney for hair and makeup.

Throughout this set you can see a ton of different looks in the funky light artifacts coming into the images. Some are strong, some weak, some busy, and some subtle. For those of you who don't already know, this effect is created by shooting through different objects (holding them up to your lens peaking into the edges of the frame). One of the things I love about doing this is that the looks are endless. On this shoot I used plastic bags, broken glass, mirrors, and more. Not only do each of those have their own look, but they also look different depending on if they are in soft light or have the light hitting them. Sometimes subtlety rocks but sometimes you need to just get weird with it.

Ben this is amazing! Can I ask what time of day this is, I realise Its around sunset/rise but you get this crazy combo of soft light with beautiful contrast, please tell you are not just some kind of wizard!
John, not a wizard haha. These were shot in the hours right before and after sunset. Out of camera, my images are extremely soft since I shoot in such soft light so I bring the contrast back up a lot in post. Hope that helps!

Beautiful pictuRes, they are so sharp. I have a very hard time getting this eith my images. I focus on the Eye, make sure i have a large enough depth of field and fast enough shutter and yet they still feel too soft. Any other in camera tips you have? Or is it all just post editing adding contrast?

Love your work, appreciate the use of natural light. Thats all i ever use and i want to keep it that way, for my personal work at least. Thanks for the tips, youve garnered a new fan:)
